Who originated the idea of the graduate business school? How many students were in the founding MBA class? Find the answers to these questions and more in the Evolution of the MBA.

Are you thinking about getting your Master of Business Administration, better known as an MBA degree, after you graduate from undegrad? It’s a tempting thought given that the median salary for MBA degree holders earn approximately $3.2 million dollars over the course of their life, nearly 19% more than those who merely hold a Bachelors! So we can see why it might be worthwhile to pursue an MBA degree but who originated the idea of the graduate business school?

The concept has been around from quite some time, the Wharton Business School started the first business school back in 1881 and then Harvard University became the world’s first school to offer an MBA program. This infographic provides some anecdotal, yet fun facts that provide great ammunition for small talk at networking events or with peers around the office. For instance I bet you didn’t know that the founding MBA class at Harvard University had 47 students. You’ll find a dozen other interesting snippets below so make sure to pass the wealth of insight and share this infographic along to your friends on Facebook or Twitter!

Protect your online profiles from the perils of Status Jacking whilst at college with these helpful tips!

A new study by Internet security company AVG discovered that 35% of 18-25 year olds in the US share their passwords with friends. That’s if they set passwords at all! While 78% use passwords to secure their laptops, only 41% do the same for their mobile phones.
In addition to rendering your online banking and other accounts vulnerable to attack, the sharing of passwords can leave your social networks open to status jacking. Status jacking is when someone you may or may not know accesses your account to impersonate you online.

Sometimes a prankster will do it to post embarrassing updates or pictures, and since it’s your account, it appears you posted them. But often it’s done by hackers to bombard your contacts with spam, trick them into giving up their account info, and direct them to malicious web sites. Either way, status jacking can instantly ruin your reputation both online and off.

The survey also found that young women are more trusting with their passwords than young men—42% of women share their passwords compared to 28% of men.

Here’s a video featuring UK comedienne Holly Burns showing how you can protect yourself from the dangers of status jacking:

Here are the 8 tips to protect yourself online:

1. Think about who you add online and allow access to your profile

2. Be aware of your privacy settings

3. Don’t use the same passwords and make them hard to guess

4. Be aware of where you sign in from

5. Think about what you post online

6. Protect your mobile device

7. Be careful what apps you install – not all are safe

8. Think about the safety of links before you click on them and make sure you have security software installed. If you don’t have AVG Free for PC’s, click here. Mac owners can get AVG LinkScanner for Mac here

College is just a few weeks away! Here are 10 things you may want to do before you go...

By Lauren Joffe for The Real College Guide, in partnership with StudentOnCampus.com

Hasta la vista, Mom and Dad. Hello, independence … but wait! Not so fast. Before you hit the road and leave your parentals behind, make sure you’re fully prepared for your new life of unwavering autonomy by spending your summer days wisely. Here, 10 things to do before you bolt. Ready, set …

1. Check up on your computer

New computers rarely come with programs like Microsoft Office, which you’ll definitely need, so be sure to purchase before you’re stuck handwriting your first assignment. And if you’re using an older comp, make sure it’s ready to take the heat: Since you will be on it all the time, install any updates or think about an upgrade. Also, find out if your school offers wireless Internet access (and if your computer is compatible) or whether you’ll need an Ethernet cable. Note: Some schools prohibit users without spyware or virus protection from connecting to the network. So, seriously, get the deets!

2. Make nice with your new dorm mate

As if you need us to tell you, check out her Facebook or MySpace page so you can get a feel for what you’re in for. Then buckle down and dial her digits for a quick chat to break the ice. Ask if there’s anything you should be aware of (like her fatal allergy to dusk or fear of the dark) and let her know of any immediate concerns you might have (like the fact that you can’t live without cable, and you’re relying on her to bring the big screen).

3. Do it up at a discount department store

Knock out the staples on your to-buy list before the selection is sold out: sheets, towels, toiletries and storage containers. But also pick up the following often-forgotten items you do not want to leave home without:

One-cup coffeemaker - Brew your own instead of wasting a whole meal swipe for a cup o’ joe from the dining hall or blowing wads of money at Starbucks.
Mattress pad – Make your dorm cot as comfy as the cushy oasis you’re used to at home while protecting yourself from whatever lived on your bed before you.
Rubber flip-flops – Save yourself from the foot infections, clumps of hair and other mysterious masses that live in your communal shower.
Power strip – Surge-protect your PC while hooking up your iPod station and hair dryer all at once.

4. Secure your class schedule

Enrollment deadlines are not meant to be ignored. In fact, the earlier you sit down to set your schedule, the better your course selection will be — so definitely don’t wait until the last minute. Also, pay attention to class restrictions, since some courses may require department approval ahead of time.

5. Plan your budget

Living costs at college range from campus to campus — the amount of money you’ll need largely depends on the location of your campus (cities can be more expensive) and the choices you make (like ordering in instead of suffering one more dining hall meal). Extra expenses will include social costs (movies, concerts, game tickets, cover for some parties), toiletries, food and drink beyond your meal plan, and transportation. Ask an upperclassman or student advisor how much cash she spends on average each week. Then pool your summer savings to determine whether you can cover your own expenses. If you need help, ask your parents or start looking for a part-time job on campus — before you get there.

6. Visit your school’s Web site

Your university may offer registration guides, campus news and summertime get-to-know-each-other sessions that you definitely do not want to miss out on — especially if you’re in the habit of throwing college junk mail in the trash (which is where important info may very well be). Plus, seeing your campus colors on the screen will psych you up — or at the very least, calm your nerves and get you into the spirit.

7. Get packing

Whether you’re shipping all your stuff UPS or loading up the car and driving cross-country, don’t leave packing to the last minute, when you’ll want to laze around and hang out with friends you won’t be seeing for a while. Designate an area of your house or bedroom to stow things you buy especially for college or things you don’t use daily but know you’ll need to take. Do not overpack! The amount of space you will have in your new room is likely much smaller than your current living quarters. Only bring what’s necessary, as your parents can always mail any left-behind belongings.

8. Put together a tool kit

Once you’re at school on your own, you’ll be shocked how often you’ll need a pair of scissors or a screwdriver — even if you’ve never used one. If you need to hang a poster or fix a loose screw, a simple, handy kit will be of great use when you least expect it. Bring a little box with a screwdriver (both Phillips and flathead), hammer, pliers, nails and screws. An inexpensive small cordless drill/screw gun is a good investment too. Pack scissors as well as adhesives, like sticky tack and tape, with your desk stuff.

9. Get protection

There’s no harm in being prepared for safe sex even if you have no particular plan or person in mind with whom to have it.

10. Hang with your high school pals

You know you’re going to miss your hometown friends, especially during the first few weeks you are apart. Yeah, you’ll make a whole slew of new friends. But make some memories first by hanging with the crew this summer.

Thomas B Maher talks to StudentOnCampus about his website YardSaleU - A free forum for every student to buy, sell and trade their goods online.

Guest post by Thomas B Maher, founder and creator of YardSaleU.com – a free open forum for every student to buy, sell and trade their goods online.

It doesn’t take long for college students to realize that in order to survive their time at school they need to be on some type of a budget. The average student doesn’t plan for this until that harsh reality hits and it’s too late. Most students are either too busy to get a job or simply don’t need that stable income to survive, they just need a couple breaks to take the strain off their wallets.

Throughout my years at Delaware University I always thought to myself how incredible it would be to have an open market to buy and sell things for college students. I knew that if I ever wanted to turn this idea into reality I would have to start with a foundation consisting of two core building blocks, “Free posts” and “College students only”!

I took a look at the number of successful and growing market places available to the public and tried to extract certain features from each that I felt fit my vision. I took a thing or two from each, for example I liked how on Ebay you’re able to know a little bit about you’re seller/buyer however I didn’t like the aspect of bidding.

With Craigslist I appreciated their component of free services as well as how everything was categorized geographically as well as topically yet I found a serious draw back in fact that you know nothing about you’re seller/buyer. As a result from my research as well as factoring in the very basics of you’re local garage and yard sale YardSaleU.com was born.

YardSaleU.com is exactly what we think college students are looking for, it’s an open market dedicated specifically and exclusively for them, they can buy, sell, and trade things at their will, FOR FREE. My ultimate goal for the site is for it to become the go to place for college students every need. No longer will they have to pay expensive retail prices for things because of their limited resources. Too often are kids paying hundreds of dollars for things like couches, coffee tables and TV’s. Now with YardSaleU.com students can search for items being sold specifically on their campus by their peers. This is unparalleled because not only will students get great deals, it’s also a huge convenience for the buyers as well as the sellers. Moving in or out of school will never be the same, furnishing that new pad wont be such a nightmare or expenditure and moving out will be an opportunity to make some extra cash instead of kicking everything to the curb. The site will also serve as a great resource for students to buy and sell textbooks. Every student knows that buying books from the school book store can really hurt their wallet. The site will put an end to students having to post fliers around school in order to sell their old books. YSU can be the source to go to for buying books because its no secret that the easiest place to get a text book is from someone at their school that took the same class that they are taking. The possibilities are limitless, YSU can reform the way that college students buy, sell and trade their goods.

Now that I’ve turned my idea into a reality and recently launched YardSaleU.com I hope it will appeal to students solely due to the fact that in order to signup for YSU you need to use a “.Edu” e-mail address. This “security” eliminates the shady factor that many see as a negative aspect on sites like Craigslist. I hope that all of the sites advantages such as the security factor as well as its free service and the convenience of categorization by campus will be the driving factor for success. I am currently in the process of improving the website as of recent in order to make the site more user friendly for students, right now we are constructing a “sign up” page so students can complete a one time registration which will make a login and password for future visits as well as offer members a weekly newsletter to keep them updated with future events, improvements, and important news.

I am excited for what’s to come, and I am hoping that the “what” is BIG!

Founder of SendMyBag.com and Karacha.com

So you’ve seen the SendMyBag.com post that we posted last week – Now it’s time to find out a little bit more about it’s founder Adam Ewart. We recently interview him exclusively for StudentOnCampus on his entrepreneurial journey so far, the business lessons he’s learned and how he juggles running 2 very successful companies.

Adam, can you give us a little bit of background on yourself?

Born in Northern Ireland and despite the businesses generally now operating elsewhere I’m still living in NI, but with a good excuse to travel!

What made you want to take the entrepreneurial route?

From selling in the primary school playground, to asking the bank for £90,000 when I was 19 in my case there was no other route.

How did you come up with the idea for SendMyBag?

I was helping my girlfriend move home from university in England and we got stung by high excess baggage charges. I thought there must be a solution, when I got home I looked online and there wasn’t, so I setup the UKs first domestic excess baggage service. Usually when I have an idea and I check it out you find that it does exist but is just not advertised well but on this occasion the idea simply had not been done. Consequently when we launched within a couple of weeks we’d helped 100’s of people move luggage around the UK.

What lessons has running SendMyBag taught you in terms if running your own business?

Keep it simple. I get asked to talk to start up groups and often I see people developing websites that are so over complicated that unless you were involved in the design you won’t be able to navigate the site to maximum value. Sendmybag.com didn’t require a fancy website so it didn’t get one, recently we’ve re-arranged bits but it’s still the same straight forward process.

What is Karacha.com?

Karacha Music is one of the UKs leading musical instrument retailers, if you go to buy a traditional “school” instrument like a violin, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet you will definitely come in contact with us. We also offer a whole host of services and hundreds of accessory products.

How do you manage to stay on top of both websites?

I’m lucky both karacha.com and sendmybag.com have very capable people running the day to day business on my behalf, without these guys it would be impossible, I’m very fortunate to have employed some excellent people over the last 5 years. Karacha.com is the bigger of the businesses and fulfils thousands of orders every month, so again we are fortunate in having a team of dedicated pickers meaning that despite the high volume, if you buy a violin on Monday morning it will normally be with you Tuesday!

What tips do you have for other student entrepreneurs out there?

Plan ahead, but not too much. I see a lot of people dive in head first without any planning and fail, equally I meet a lot of people who are so obsessed with planning they don’t give themselves the chance to really succeed. I think you need to strike the balance.

What are your future goals? Any new ideas in the pipeline?

Sendmybag.com this year launched a student essentials pack, over the next year I can see a lot more products coming online. The goal with Karacha is to become not just one of the leading but the top UK music store, a lot of work ahead but all very achievable!

Thanks to Adam for the interview – Be sure to check out SendMyBag and Karacha

College would not be the same without a few drinking games. We present 6 of our favourites for you plus some crazy beer pong videos for you to enjoy!

With college starting up for a lot of us, it’s time to address one of those college staples – drinking games. I have played enough of them to know which ones will knock me out for hours and which ones will have my head ringing for days. The amount of college related drinking game stories I have is scary, but I digress….It’s time I introduce to 6 of the most popular drinking games happening on campus right now so y’all can stay clued up! Let’s go…

6. Dice Drinking Games

These have got really popular in the last few years and it’s no surprise as to why. All you really need is a die, cups and beer or any other drink. Now there are tons of different variations out there, but one of my favourites is 6 cups.

To start out you need: at least four players, a die, six cups, mugs, glasses, etc., and lots of beer. The first person rolls the die and has to fill the corresponding cup. For example, player1 rolls a 5, and has to fill cup 5 with beer. Then player2 gets to roll. If he/she rolls a 5, they have to drink cup 5. Otherwise they must fill another cup for whatever they roll on the die. It is now player 3′s turn. The game is real simple to learn, if you roll a die and the corresponding cup is empty, then you fill it. If it is full then you drink it. The player must keep rolling until they fill up a cup. For example, cups 2-5 are all full. Player three rolls a 2. Player 3 drinks cup 2. It is still player 3′s turn until he rolls a now 1, 2 or 6. This game gets tough on the belly if you are drinking anything but light beer. But it is a blast.

5. Power Hour/Century Club

The Century Club (also known as the Centurion Challenge) was the first drinking game I played in college and boy is it a good one! The Power Hour is very similar to the Century Challenge except the duration of the game is shorter.

Century Club – Each person should have a shot glass in front of them. Every minute all players must take a shot of beer for 100 minutes.

Power Hour – The object is to take a shot of beer every minute for an entire hour.

4. Edward 40 Hands

One of those classic drinking games that has always brought up some odd scenarios….

1. Have a friend duct tape a 40 oz of malt liquor to each hand (or both hands to one 40oz if you’re taking it easy). The last person to tape in will have a harder time, but with some ingenuity they can manage.

2. Nobody can remove the 40’s from their hands until they’re finished drinking all 80 ounces of beer.

With both hands taped up it’s gonna be difficult to use your phone or go to the bathroom. SoC Tip = DRINK FAST!

3. Flip Cup/Boat Race

Two teams stand across from each other at a table. Fill all the cups approximately half way with beer. The starting end of the table is decided between the teams. The start of the game is up to you…counting to three works for example. First players from each team proceed to consume their beverages…upon completion, they position their cups on the edge of the table. Proceed to “flip” the cup (at least 360 degrees) so that it lands straight up or down. If a player misses, proceed to retrieve the cup and try again. Once the “flip”is achieved, the next player goes. That player proceeds to consume, and the cycle continues, until the last player in line completes their “flip”. This scores the team one point, and the other team has to finish their beverages, no matter where they are in line. When I’ve played this it has normally been up to 10 with a win by 2. It’s up to you of course…..

Try and beat this guy….

2. Kings

This game is awesome – got a lot of rules to remember but it’s worth it.

Spread cards face-down around a large cup. Draw in clockwise order. A “drink” is a normal sip.

- Ace – Social – He/she who draws proposes a toast and everyone drinks.

- 2-6 – Black (Clubs & Spades) – TAKE the card’s value in drinks.

- 2-6 – Red (Hearts & Diamonds) – GIVE the card’s value in drinks. The total may be split-up between multiple players.

- 7 – Waterfall – EVERYBODY begins to CHUG. You can’t stop until the person to your RIGHT has stopped. He/she who draws may stop first.

- 8 – Thumb Master – He/she who draws puts his/her thumb on the table. The last person to do so drinks.

- 9 – Rhyme – He/she who draws says a sentence. The person to his/her LEFT must rhyme with the last word in the original sentence. This continues in clockwise order. Rhyming words may not be repeated. If you repeat a word or can’t think of one, you drink.

- 10 – Category – He/she who draws thinks of a category, like “Simpsons Characters.” Then, he/she says one, like “Homer.” Then, the person to his/her LEFT must think of another one, like “Bart.” This continues in clockwise order. If you repeat an item or can’t think of one, you drink.

- Jack – Guys drink – A toast is often included.

- Queen – Ladies drink – A toast is often included.

- King – We don’t call it “kings” for nothing. He/she who draws the first, second and third king pours some of his/her drink into the “large cup” AND comes up with a rule that must be obeyed for the rest of the game, like “no showing your teeth” or “no saying ‘drink,’ ‘drank’ or ‘drunk’.” Anyone in violation of a rule drinks. He/she who draws the fourth king must POUND the contents of the “large cup.” Drawing the fourth king marks the end of the game.

1. Beer Pong

Hands down, this is THE college drinking game!

The materials you need for this game are some cups of beer, a ping pong ball, and a table. The game is best played with either two people or two teams of two.

Arrange the cups of beer on either side of the table like you are setting up bowling pins. You should have at least six cups on both sides. Each team takes a turn by trying to get the ping pong ball into the other team’s cups. If they succeed the other teams must drink that cup. The cup is then removed and the rest of the cups are rearranged so that they are close to each other. Each team alternates turns like this.

When all the cups on one side have been cleared the team that cleared them wins and the other teams must finish any cups remaining on the winning team’s side.

Check out these guys who have turned Beer Pong into an art form….Crazy!

Thanks to RealBeer.com and CollegeBeerGames

Moving into your college dorm is one of the most exciting times in your college life – I remember when I walked into mine last year….The small room already half filled with my numerous boxes of bulging junk, the sparse walls…you get the picture.

Well, a new startup called Design Your Dorm (also known as College Room Creator) is a web based 3D interior design tool that allows college students to customize their dorm room/residence hall room interiors.

The site has built 3D virtual models of common dorm room layouts, allowing new students to figure out what they’ll have room for long before they ever set foot in their dorms. To help figure out the exact room configuration, DesignYourDorm currently has a few hundred 3D models of various common dorm room items, including electronics like TV sets and Xbox 360s, furniture like beds and desks, and storage containers that you can freely drag and drop into the room.

Along with the 3D designer, Design Your Dorm also has a store which will allows you to purchase some of the goods you have decked your room out with and also a highly useful checklist which you can print out and use to make moving in day a breeze.
